Tabata Training

This is one of the most intense forms of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which is completed within a 4 minute period. This specific training was developed in Tokyo by Dr Izumi Tabata, Ph.D., at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports.

Tabata is a timed interval training method which alternates between 20 seconds of exercise performed at maximum effort and 10 seconds of rest - for a total of 4 minutes.

Main benefits of Tabata:

  • Obliterate Fat
  • Increase Aerobic and Anaerobic Endurance
  • Efficiency

You can either use a compund exercise such as bench press, dead lift or squat or do any cardio exercise for Tabata.

A sample Tabata workout using the rowing machine -

1. Rows (hard) - Near flat out effort for 20 seconds
2. Rows (easy, for recovery) - Slow rowing for 10 seconds
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 above 3 more times to complete a full 4 minute workout.

I like it. Especially the simplicity which allows it to be fitted in between other exercices. You can also manage to do it effectively and continously for a long period. Its benefits are immense and as such I believe it is practical. Thanks will try it out.

This is very informative. I have heard this exercise before and I have no idea how effective it is. I will try this for sure.

HIIT is one of my favorite routines and I find this Tabata Routine great. But I suggest to new beginners before doing this is to have a good warm up because you dont want to tore your muscles.
I will definitely try this routine because I already find my routine boring.

I love that it is simple and not have complicated steps. I'm new to this but I'm definitely trying this Tabata training. The benefits looks promising so I'll be trying this training this coming week. It is fun to try new training maybe this new exercise is suitable to my body. There is no harm in trying.

Tabata style workouts are one of my favorites because I find that the "fast/slow" pace means I don't get bored and I don't burn out too fast! Plus it's known to have so many benefits for fat loss that it's hard to go wrong with it!
