Arnis - Filipino Martial Arts
« on: August 17, 2018, 12:38:24 AM »
Arnis which is the Filipino art of stick fighting has been used as an effective means of both defense and offense by locals notably during the wars against Spain, England, America, and Japan and even hundreds if not thousands of years before that using the ancient Filipino art of Kali which uses bladed and non bladed weapons, in which Arnis was derived from.

Arnis has 3 variants the Solo Baston (single cane), Doble Baston (double cane) and the Espada y Daga (sword and dagger).  It's a very effective self dense because it teaches you to treat any thing as a weapon.  Arnis is being taught in all schools in the Philippines in the past but nowadays it's sad that most schools have decided to stop teaching it.  it's now being taught in just a few schools as an elective  P.E. subject.

It is the first time I hear about Arnis, it seems a bit hard to understand this sport and I guess is hard to practice as well mostly because of the stick.

I'm a Filipino so arnis is not new to me. In my high school years it was thought in the first or second year unfortunately our section was not selected for this subject but my sister has an arnis class in high school. She showed me some basic moves and It is easy to follow. The basic moves are easy but the moves that are more advanced that I saw once in a television is so complicated. I hoped that every youth in our country had an opportunity to learn this sport.

It's a good sport but it's not popular compared to other martial arts sports. It lacks promotion and it's not even patronize locally. I rarely heard of a competition related to Arnis. The Philippines sports commission or organization should include this to any local sports to regain and uplift it's importance. This is a sport that originates and signify Philippines.

I enjoyed watching arnis  demonstration because it has a flair of dance and body coordination. I actually saw a very good group demonstration of Arnis here in UK. It is a community of Filipino OFW and one of their yearly celebration is to showcase some Filipino activities or culture. The group was so synchronized, it was so fun to watch. I  was kind of curious and temptes to study  Arnis

I used to play this when I was in highschool. This is part of my curriculum in one subject. The arnis martial arts has been one of the known martial arts in the Philippines. This is also a part of the national athletic game in the country.

It is so sad to know that national sports, Arnis is not being mandated to be taught in school. This sport is great and it is a good way of learning self-defense using a stick. Every Filipinos must experience the art of handling Baston sticks because not only it is fun but also another way of appreciating the Philippine martial arts.

It seems that arnis has not been popular in my era and I don't know if it is still practiced except for competition purposes. The modern times made people go for modern styles of fighting.
